The European Energy Charter, the Energy Charter Treaty (ECT), the Protocol on Energy Efficiency and Related Environmental Aspects (PEEREA) and the Amendment to the Trade-related provisions of the Energy Charter Treaty were entered into by the European Communities.
The European Coal and Steel Community ceased to exist in 2002 when its founding treaty expired. As of 1 December 2009, the European Union replaced and succeeded the ‘European Community’. The European Atomic Energy Community (EURATOM) remained an independent entity though represented by the European Commission.
